Sidewalk Sale Preview Event: Friday, July 24

It's true that the Scarsdale Village Sidewalk Sale officially takes place July 30-Aug. 1, but Sticks & Strings has always been a bit rebellious. That's why we're saying to heck with the calendar and inviting everyone to our indoor Preview Sale on July 24, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Get great deals on great yarns, but we suggest you come early if you want enough to make a sweater. Come too late for the bargains, and you may only be able to nab enough to make a scarf!

By the way, during our actual July 30, 31 and Aug. 1 sidewalk sale, we'll have our items in an air-conditioned tent that we're sharing with our wonderful neighbor, Courage B. No sweating allowed!

The Bucks Start Here

Laurie Thomas I am so excited about this new rewards program we're introducing to Sticks & Strings customers. Yarn Bucks make it easy to rack up the savings: For every $25 you spend in the shop on regularly priced merchandise, we punch a hole in your Yarn Bucks card. Once that card is chock full of holey goodness, turn it in for $25 off your purchase of regularly priced merchandise. That's all there is to it.

Yarn Bucks will be available at the shop in early August, so be sure to stop by and start saving!

Happy Knitting,
Laurie

Be Sweet Trunk Show: Thursday, Aug. 20

Be Sweet Owner Nadine Curtis is going to be in our shop from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 20, and she's bringing an array of wonderful patterns, yarns, and finished projects like the gorgeous Organic Garden Baby Blankets pictured below (if you're dying to know specifics about making them, click here). We usually don't sell finished items, but this is our big exception because Be Sweet is so exceptional!

Be Sweet blanketsNadine founded Be Sweet in 2003 while living in Cape Town, South Africa, and from the start she has made it her mission to bring socially and environmentally friendly products that help support community development around the world. Be Sweet, now headquartered in Sausalito, Calif., works with several job creation programs in South Africa. In fact, the groups she works with now encompass more than 200 villagers — mostly female members of the Xhosa tribe, who live in Cape Town, the Eastern Cape region and Johannesburg. In addition, Be Sweet donates a portion of its profits to the Shaw Park School, a primary and secondary school in the Eastern Cape where many children of the programs' participants attend.

Please come join us in welcoming Nadine to the shop. She'll talk about her company's latest community-based efforts, answer any questions you may have — and of course, share in our wine and other goodies during her visit.

We're Stocking Swans Island Yarn!

It's coming super soon! We're excited, you're excited, but remember — Scarsdale has an ordinance against sleeping bags on Spencer Place. There's no need to camp out anyway because we are taking pre-orders for worsted (12 colors available) and fingering (6 colors available) weights. The skeins are made from the same luscious wool that Swans Island, based off the coast of Maine, uses to create its line of soft, beautiful, traditionally made blankets. They are dyed organically (we're talking all-natural roots and plants here) in small batches, and offer amazing "hand." It's very exciting that they've decided to sell their fiber in addition to a fantastic gift and blanket collection.

First Lady tagIn fact, on March 17, First Lady Michelle Obama presented a spring green throw made by Swans Island as one of the White House gifts for a visiting delegation from Ireland. As Swans Island President Bill Laurita told Coastal Living magazine, "We had sent some samples of our blankets along with fabric samples, and it just so happened one of those fabric samples was green. We really weren’t thinking St. Patrick’s Day; we were thinking more along the line of First Lady Michelle Obama’s designer eye and taste for beautiful, rich colors." Laurita reports that the First Lady had seen the sample and had "fallen in love with it." We can't say we blame her!

If you haven't heard of Swans Island before, we must get you acquainted right away. Start here, then come to the shop and we'll fill you in about just how wonderful an experience using this yarn in your next project will be!

Laura's Book Celebration Set for September

Luxe KnitsStop by the shop today and get a signed copy of our very own Laura Zukaite's book, Luxe Knits, at the special price of $18.95 through July 31 (while supplies last). Also, stay tuned for our big in-store celebration of Laura's accomplishment. We'll have good wine, great food and a special trunk show of every piece featured in the book. In addition, Iris Schreier of Artyarns will be visiting for the event, since many of the pieces used her hand-painted skeins.

Watch your in-box for an invite soon!
